What Happened to Vacations?
It used to be that people took vacations every year. That was kind of the way things went — you worked all year, and then you got a couple of weeks off. You either took your family somewhere in the summer, or you took the time off around Christmas.
Now it seems like fewer and fewer people are taking vacations. The economy has a lot to do with it lately, but I think businesses’ expectations have changed too. They are now expecting more out of employees than they used to… including more days at work and less vacation time taken. Plus, how families save has changed, so I suspect a lot of families can no longer afford vacations — even before the downturn in the economy.
It’s kind of too bad, because I think the popular vacation destinations now are a lot cooler than they were 30 years ago, probably because airfare is more affordable. Now you can dive in Fiji, fish in Canada, or ski in Europe. Not that you couldn’t do those things back then, but it’s more prevalent these days, I think.
