Save Money with Gravel Paths

Gravel paths are often used by homeowners, office park landlords, and even public parks as a way to save money on landscaping.  They don’t require the same amount of money, time, and labor that cement, asphalt, or brick paths do.  Some homeowners in our neighborhood even have gravel paths (grandfathered in, as it’s an older neighborhood, and the gravel paths were probably done many years ago) where the sidewalks should go.

Gravel paths, if done right, should have all the gravel be about the same size.  This typically requires that they be run through a gravel screener such as an EZ Screen.  Gravel or rock screens save time and labor by mechanically — and quickly! — ensuring that all of the pieces are uniform in size.

Once you have your gravel ready, you will need to set borders along the edges of where you want your path to go.  Metal borders have gone out of favor, perhaps because of the tendency to slice oneself up on them (I remember my sister falling on one when we were kids!).  However, you will need to make sure that your plastic borders are strong enough to keep the gravel in.

Then you will just dump the gravel onto the path within the borders, and spread it around so that it fills the entire area evenly.  And then you are done — no waiting for it to dry or anything like that.  Now you have a gravel path!
