Kids Play to Learn and So Should We
The reason that children play when they are young is so that they can learn about the world around them. Of course, they don’t exactly see it this way. They think that they are playing just to have a good time. But the reality is that they are learning how things work by enjoying themselves and exploring their curiosities.
Kids learn from all different kinds of play. They learn sharing and interaction with others when they’re at the playground. They learn about household activities like baking and cleaning when they’re given play food and toy vacuums. They learn about construction and design from building with wooden toys. And they learn from every type of play because they use their imagination while playing.
As adults, we can take some cues from this. We can choose to learn by playing. The office may get boring sometimes but it doesn’t have to be a place where we stagnate. We can choose to get creative with our work so that we learn more. We can take classes, bring new research methods into our work and get close with others on collaborative projects. And just like kids do, we may discover that we’re having such a good time playing that we forget that we’re learning - or working!
