Tips for Selling Jewelry on eBay
eBay can be a great place for members to sell things as a part time small business. For example, one thing you see a lot of on eBay is jewelry. Sometimes this is people selling off estates after someone has died; sometime it is people selling off their unwanted jewelry; and sometimes it is dealers selling jewelry that they have picked up at garage sales, estate sales, and thrift stores with the purpose of reselling it.
If you are going to sell gold for cash on eBay, you will need to keep in mind a few things:
- Price depends on the value of gold. Not across the board, of course, as you can sell gold jewelry for more than the value of the gold if it is rare, antique, or made by an expensive manufacturer. However, the value of gold impacts prices on eBay more than you would think.
- Protect yourself. It is a good idea to always describe an item accurately — or, if you don’t know, simply state “I don’t know.” Particularly with jewelry, if you don’t get an appraisal it is a good idea to state that you are not an expert or that you are not sure in your description. Keep in mind the recent lawsuit where the top jeweler Tiffany for selling fakes of their jewelry. While you might not get sued, it’s safe to say that you could get into a lot of trouble for not being honest and accurate.
Selling unwanted jewelry –or reselling jewelry you’ve found on your scavenger hunts — on eBay can be a good way to earn some extra money, but make sure you are realistic about prices and protect yourself as much as possible!
