Writing Online Press Releases

As a freelance writer, I write a lot of press releases for businesses to use online.  Online press releases are highly effective marketing tools when used properly.  Here are a few tips for writing online press releases.

  1. Make sure your press releases are about news.  This concept is difficult for some people, because naturally someone who is really excited and proud about their business thinks everything about it is interesting and newsworthy.  Real news, however, is an event or something you would see reported in a newspaper — such as this divorce mediation firm opening a new office for divorce in Scottsdale.
  2. Online press releases should be search engine optimized.  This is different than traditional, print-based press releases — the ones you would mail to newspapers and other publications, back in the day.  Because the Internet is so heavily focused on attracting the search engines, your press release really needs to be optimized around one or two important keyword phrases for your business.  For instance, the mediation firm just mentioned might use keyword phrases such as “affordable divorce Scottsdale” and “divorce lawyer Scottsdale.”  If you aren’t sure what keywords to choose or how to write a properly optimized press release for the Internet, you should probably hire a professional to do this for you.
  3. Online press releases should be submitted to the appropriate channels.  This is another reason why hiring a professional is a good idea.  Writers and SEO firms do this all the time, so they know how to properly release and distribute a press release for the best coverage.  While doing it yourself will at least ensure that you get some good links and perhaps a little boost in traffic, you get what you pay for — and if you don’t pay for results, most likely you’re not going to get them.

Online press releases can be a great tool for marketing your business, but it’s important not to misuse or abuse it!
