The Benefits of Wellness Programs in the Workplace

employee rewardsQuite often, the health of a company’s employees has a direct impact on production, profits, and the cost of medical benefits.  The purpose of wellness incentive programs is to improve the employees’ health and the company’s productivity.

Incentive programs enable employers to help their workers maintain their health and increase company morale.  It is typically the responsibility of the human resource department to monitor and manage incentive programs.  If the programs are not monitored, they usually are not very effective.  To make the most out of an incentive program, collaboration between the company and health insure provider is needed.

The end goal of a wellness incentive program is to enable the company to spend less on health care and improve the health and wellness of the employees.  Successful incentive programs can also help employee morale and reduce turnover.  Typical incentive programs use health screenings, risk assessments, wellness programs, workshops, and health fairs.  Education is a major part of an effective program.

The company that I work for just began a wellness incentive program.  There has been a bit of grumbling from employees because they are expected to participate in the workshops and other wellness programs.  However, I really believe that these programs will help to improve our workers’ overall health and ability to deal with stress.  I also think that these programs will lead to increased communication between employees because they will attend meetings and workshops with people that they normally do not interact with on a daily basis.
