Strong Content is the Key
A lot of people are under the mistaken impression that SEO optimization alone will enable them to make and stay at the top of search engines. 
While optimizing you website will help, if you do not have quality content on your site, it will not stay at the top of search engines for long.
Search engines are now smart enough to track your traffic. What this means is that they will see how long users will stay at the site, how many pages are visited, etc. Many webmasters will make the mistake of setting up a website with a bunch of content that has been optimized, but to the extent of being usable. If you have a bunch of content that nobody can understand, then there is no reason for someone to stay at your site.
You can buy SEO packages from different businesses to help you move up the search engines, but what you need to stay there is solid, quality content. A site with mediocre content and strong SEO will stay at the top of search engines longer than poor content driven sites with great SEO.
