Believing in Your Ink

What do religious tattoos and tribal tattoos, two very common sorts of designs, have in common? Both feature designs connected with belief, or faith, in some element of the surrounding world or higher power. The use of these types of design is often undertaken by persons believing in the various matters of faith associated with the given design. In this day, faith is an ever dwindling element of attitude, be it associated with religion or not, yet strength in faith for something, anything, can grow hope and fortitude that translates into confidence of decision. Just as sailors wore inked adornments to protect them from drowning at sea, so do modern day persons use body art. Like a protective amulet or talisman, these sorts of designs empower the wearer, allowing him or her to find inspiration or solace within the tattoo. Imagine investing hope into an amulet that hangs upon a necklace, only to lose it should the chain break. The permanence of body art allows for the removal of that concern with inspiring designs that seek to remind us of our own faith or hope. In that regard, inked designs contain even more beauty than even the rarest of charms.
