Tax time is fast approaching. It feels like I just prepared my taxes a month ago and suddenly that nagging chore is on my back again. I wish taxes were simpler. I don’t mind contributing tax money to our roads, to our army, to our needy, etc. That is what I am doing when I pay taxes; I am contributing money like a charitable benefactor. Instead of getting a lovely “thank you” letter, however, I get the burden of preparing a statement for the IRS. I get to make sure I worry about storing my documents for three years and I get to worry about saving all of my receipts. It is cumbersome.
I also have to be concerned with all the rules and tricks within the IRS system. For example, in an effort to reduce tuition I pay for my daughter’s college I have to hire a college planning services company to make sure I am receiving all my deductions and adequately using my 529 college savings plan. There are so many issues to be concerned with when dealing with taxes.
I would like to see a simple system where everyone above a certain income level contributes a certain amount and we all call it a day.
