My Dad is Getting Older

Sometimes it’s hard to remember that my dad is getting older.  I tend to think of my parents as ageless until something happens to remind me that just isn’t true.

For instance, about a year and a half ago, my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer.  He went through surgery to have a tumor removed, and the doctors declared him cancer free even without chemo or radiation.

All good news, of course.  But now that my dad is old enough to be on Medicare, he’s had to start thinking about some kind of supplemental health insurance, just in case the cancer comes back.

It’s not difficult to find Medigap insurance in Florida, but of course since he has a pre-existing condition now it’s more difficult — even though it’s also more necessary, ironically.  Thankfully Medigap insurance seems to be easier to get when you have a pre-existing condition than regular health insurance.  I’m not sure he’d be able to go out and buy individual health insurance in Florida now, if he weren’t old enough to qualify for Medicare – the insurance companies just wouldn’t cover him, because of his medical history.

Luckily my dad is reasonably healthy, for the time being.  I hope he stays that way for a while!

I Would Highly Recommend This Dentist

I once had a Washington DC dentist that was just amazing!  He was the best dentist I ever had.  I really felt like his “patient” rather than just one of many customers that day.  And he was so friendly-not to mention cute!!  He was one of the best Washington DC dentists according to many many sources, which was amazing considering that he was on my insurance list and didn’t just cater to those senators and congressmen.

He had all kinds of nice approaches that just made the process so much easier.  I wish all dentists worked like this, but here are some really horrible ones out there.  Especially if you’re on a budget dental plan. I really hate those cattle-call sorts of places that have tens of you lined up in chairs waiting to be “processed.”  They kept me in that chair for 45 minutes without looking at me once; I finally just got up and left.  Well, this guy is not like that at all and I highly recommend him.  Whether you’re having a regular check-up, cosmetic dentistry, fillings, crowns-or something bigger that might require sedation, I can’t recommend this dentist highly enough!  And don’t forget the cuteness factor!

Wellness Programs Offer Rewards

The main objective of wellness incentive programs is to improve the overall health of your employees so they do not miss days of work, use their health care unnecessarily, and to improve the overall atmosphere of the workplace.

Buy how do you motivate people to live healthier lifestyles when they show no interest in making healthy choices? Try making it easy for them.

Some people simply choose not to work out or cook healthy meals because they consider these things to be too time consuming. Well, if that’s the case, offer employees local gym memberships close by the office. Or, hire a nutritionist to come in during work hours to host a seminar on cooking quick, healthy meals.

Other employees think that staying healthy equals expensive decisions. If money is a concern for your employees, offer free immunization shots during flu season. And maybe even consider turning one of those unoccupied offices into a small gym room. Just purchase some inexpensive used gym equipment and see how full this room gets during down time!

Or, hold a contest to see who can get in the best shape in three months. Offer a cool, prize like tickets to a concert or a gift certificate to a popular store.

Wellness programs prove necessary, because oftentimes, good health is not the only reward.

Predicting a bright future with the help of topsoil screening machines

ez-screen3The company I work for is in dire need of topsoil screening machines in order to win a local government contract. The length of the work plus the profit potential make this opportunity much to great to allow to pass by. We all know that it would be bigger than any single job the company has done to date, and we are happy with that.

The scary part comes in when we start looking at prices, lease options and overall cost associated with owning dirt screening plants. We are not talking about cheap pieces of equipment here. The good thing is that should we win the bid, we’ll have enough time to work out the financing arrangement and have the dirt screening machines brought to us.

The other not so scary aspect is that if we can make a good enough deal on the acquisition of the first portable screener, we will be able to then submit to other RFP’s in our area and perhaps even to a slightly wider region. There is a ton of work waiting for the company that has the equipment, can get it into a job site, and get the work done right away.

We are all looking forward to the future of what our company can do.

LEED courses can help heal the planet

In order to successfully pass your LEED courses examinations, you are going to need to be prepared. The process of building structures that meet or exceed LEED certification is not something that can be done without some effort. Fortunately, there are a number of top quality LEED test prep institutions that will provide you with the theory and practicality you’ll need to take the exams and pass on your first attempt.

And this is a very good thing from the perspective of helping this planet to heal itself. With so many years of less than positive building practices, it is about time that some effort and energy goes into the things we build.

Shortcuts just won’t do when it comes to receiving a LEED certification on a building you’ve designed or built. Yes, in the past the mantra may have been to build it fast, build it cheap. In today’s world, however, this just won’t cut it. Good enough is truly no longer good enough.

As new world building takes on a life of its own, it becomes more important than ever to truly know, to feel the soul of a structure. Properly designed and built, and those four walls and roof become a living, breathing thing.

What Changed When I Got a Boat

boating

I had always wanted to own a boat. I relished the idea of spending weekends out on the water. What I didn’t know was how much was going to change in my life after getting a boat.

Some of those changes (both big and small) included:

How a personal loan helped in my debt consolidation

After a while, I finally took the time, sat down and really did a thorough examination of my financial status. All in all, it was not really all that appealing. Given how much money I owed on my vehicle, and various credit cards, I began to seriously consider some sort of debt consolidation program.

One of the first things I was told was actually what I had already started to do. And that was have a very clear understanding of exactly what was owed, to whom, at what sort of interest rates, and when I would likely pay off the debt.

Once the data had been collected, it was suggested to me that other than winning the lottery, I might seriously consider some sort of personal loan strategy in order to work my way out from under the mountain of debt.

In a nutshell, the theory behind taking out a personal loan is that if you can get your interest rates lower on the loan that what you are paying for the various credit card, auto, and other loans, you should theoretically be able to become debt free faster and healthier than with out it.

Of course, all of this depends upon not continuing the spending habits of the past. I think, however, that I’ve learned my lesson. I’m ready to move forward: clear and clean of high interest debt.

Lift Chairs: Worth The Investment?

I have thought about purchasing lift chairs in the past, but I did not know if they actually work well. I am hoping to learn more about them from the individuals that may already have them. First, to make sure you know what I am talking about, I am referring to the type of chair that helps you to stand up, by giving you a lift through the movement of the seat or the entire chair. For people who are unable to get up and down easily, this type of chair is supposed to help you to do that.

I have joint pain in both of my knees and elbows. It hurts to put pressure on my knees or to rely on my arms to pull myself up when sitting. I have already invested in stairlifts for my home, which help me to move up and down the stairs. This allows me to get down to the basement to get laundry, for example. The lift recliners seem like a good investment, too, but I want to make sure my investment is well made since I am on a limited budget. Do they work? From what I have seen, they look like an ideal way to get past the pains.

Transitioning to a New Way of Living

One of the most terrifying times in my life was when my husband was injured by a fall off of the scaffolding at work. Thankfully, it was not fatal, but when it happened, we knew right away that it was going to be a long road to recovery. He was rushed to the hospital with undetermined injuries and when I got there, he was already in surgery. He came out of surgery and we were informed that they had done what they could and the rest was up to him. We were also told that there was a good chance that he would not walk again.

My husband, being the fighter that he has always been, would not even listen to this. We knew he would walk again, even if he had to pour everything he had into making it happen. After being in the hospital for several months, I wanted to make his transition to coming home as easy as possible. I had lift chairs put in the living room and I had ramps put in at both the front and back doors.

I even had a plumber come in and install a walk-in bath, where he could sit and take a shower, as I knew hot showers was one of his greatest pleasures in life. He made it home and had more drive and determination than anyone I have ever known before. His spirits stayed high, and though, he still has a long road ahead of him, I know he will be as good as new one day.
